The Task Force on the Undergraduate Experience was established in May 1987 as a result of various discussions among the Deans, General Faculty Committee, and members of the Board of Trustees.  It was headed by Provost Robert Duncan. Karl Fredric Putnam was born March 28, 1879, to a prominent family in Mt. Carmel, Illinois–banker and attorney Samuel R. Putnam and Agatha Weinbach Putnam. Karl attended the Northwestern University Academy (preparatory school), graduating on June 13, 1899. He entered Northwestern University in the fall of 1899, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Liberal Arts in June 1903.
